We are looking for a motivated and dynamic individual to take on the role of the Clinical Research Facility Nursing & Midwifery Lead.
The Manchester CRF provides opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds across Greater Manchester to take part in research.
Hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, the Manchester CRF is the largest and most comprehensive of the 28 NIHR Clinical Research Facilities, enhancing translation of scientific advances through experimental research.

As the Clinical Research Facility Nursing & Midwifery Lead you will work closely with the Manchester CRF Operational Director and Medical Director to deliver the strategic aims of the Manchester CRF at MFT.
You will also be responsible for line managing the Manchester CRF Matron and Manchester CRF Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
The scope of the role extends to supporting the NIHR Manchester CRF’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, responsibility for clinical and research governance and for ensuring safe delivery of Clinical Trials.

Service Development and Leadership
Provide visible, effective clinical, research and professional leadership which demonstrates the values and behaviours identified within the Trust’s framework.
Demonstrate effective leadership by promoting and role modelling expected leadership behaviours.
Actively contribute to developing strategy within MCRF and MFT R&I, ensuring the needs of patients and families are integral to strategic aims.
Provide line management and develop the clinical research teams and individuals within the MCRF to provide effective, accountable care.
Work in partnership with the Principal Investigators, actively supporting and empowering senior nurses & midwives to develop and utilise clinical leadership skills.
Lead the MCRF sites to achieve continuous improvement within the framework of the Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation programme.
Enable a culture where all individuals are able to contribute equally.
Ensure the quality of service delivered aligns with the MCRF strategies to improving performance and the patient experience.
Support the MCRF Operational Director and MCRF Director by contributing to the development of workforce plans, providing innovative approaches to workforce delivery to meet service requirements and seek to be an employer of choice for nurses and midwives.
Proactively promote Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in line with legislation, policy and the MCRF EDI and Patient, Public, Inclusion, Engagement and Participation strategies. .
Be responsive and work collaboratively to problem solve and lead in difficult and problematic situations.
Clinical Governance/Effectiveness
Support and contribute to the research and clinical governance agenda for R&I, working closely with the Head of Nursing & Midwifery, Assistant Chief Nurse and R&I senior management team to deliver safe and effective care.
Working with MCRF Operational Director and Head of Nursing & Midwifery ensure appropriate mitigation is in place and issues are escalated appropriately.
Act as MCRF safeguarding lead ensuring Trusts safeguarding policies are implemented at a local level in conjunction with the Head of Nursing & Midwifery and Assistant Chief Nurse for R&I
Ensure all MCRF research nurses & midwives comply with the NMC regulations and work within their scope of practice.
Support the MCRF Operational Director to embed a culture of learning through the management and oversight of incidents and patient and staff feedback, within MCRF
Contribute to the Trusts achievement of the Care Quality Commission Standards and other regulatory standards ensuring a programme of audit and review is in place to maintain required standards.
Ensure nursing documentation meets regulatory and Trust standards
Maintain insight into new developments in practice and contribute to programmes of work to implement changes which improve the quality of care.
Ensure that there are robust systems and processes in place to ensure that all nurses maintain their professional registration, taking appropriate action in line with Trust policy and professional legislation
where issues have been identified.
Ensure all documentation for patients and staff is appropriate, accountable and defensible and meets identified standards for record keeping.
Foster and develop a culture within the workforce which enables and supports individuals to continually improve services.
Accept the diversity of others and address unacceptable behaviour.
Oversee the delivery of excellent quality nursing care to research participants facilitating clinical decisions at the highest level.
Act as an expert resource and source of advice and support to all colleagues regarding clinical care and practice.
Collaborate with all support services and departments to ensure that they are meeting the needs of patients in research and create a seamless integrated patient pathway.
Proactively identify opportunities to facilitate and negotiate change and new ways of working to support new care/ research delivery processes within MCRF.
Advise the Trust and MCRF and R&I senior management team on appropriate local or national polices which may influence or impact on the clinical research nursing & midwifery services provided.
Support MCRF with the electronic patient record (HIVE) integration and help to maximise utilisation.
Policy & Strategy
Provide professional leadership on the implementation and provision of training and education programmes within MCRF ensuring that this provides staff with skills to undertake new roles and meet
the needs of patients.
Contribute to the MCRF training needs analysis and MCRF training and education plan / strategy.
Ensure that MCRF meets the requirements to provide education and deliver quality placements for students.
Minimise clinical risk by ensuring that clinical practice and the development of clinical guidelines adhere to guidelines produced by professional and regulatory bodies.
Contribute to the development of a strategy for the continued development of nurses and AHP’s practising at specialist and advanced level across the Trust.
Represent the MCRF Operational Director and Director at identified committees or meetings both internal and external to MCRF, providing feedback as appropriate.
Represent the Head of Nursing & Midwifery and Assistant Chief Nurse for R&I at identified committees or meetings both internal and external to R&I, providing feedback as appropriate.
Demonstrate clear visible leadership in respect of the systems and process in place for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults within the service.
Accountable to the MCRF Operational Director on all operational/managerial nursing and midwiferyissues within MCRF.
Accountable to the Head of Nursing & Midwifery on all professional nursing and midwifery issues within R&I and across the Trust.
Finance and Resource Management
Taking direction from the MCRF Operational Director, responsible for undertaking reviews of the
nursing and midwifery workforce and skill mix across their area of responsibility.
Support and facilitate the management of pay and not pay budgets in partnership with the MCRF sites.
Advise on patient needs relating to the purchase of equipment including prioritisation of equipment
within MCRF.
In collaboration with the R&I accountant and MCRF Operational Managers, support matrons and
nurse managers to effectively manage the responsibility for their staff budgets through the regular review
of establishments and skill mix ensuring the appropriate levels are maintained and secured in line with
research study requirements.
Support the MCRF Operational Director and Head of Nursing & Midwifery to lead on initiatives related
to staff wellbeing and implement robust processes to manage sickness and absence in line with Trust
Policy
With the MCRF Operational Director develop and implement effective and efficient ways of working to
maximise the use of resources.
Ensure that services are delivered within allocated budgets, identifying evidence to support safe and
effective service delivery and contribute to the delivery of MCRF financial plans.
Ensure the management of staffing resource is aligned to Trust Policies and Procedures, providing
advice to CRF Operational Managers, Matrons and Nurse Managers
Monitor Human Resources workforce indicators (vacancies, sickness, e rostering KPI’s, etc),
implementing and monitoring delivery of actions to address areas for improvement.
Contribute the Trust achievement of the NIHR performance targets and reporting, and other regulatory
standards required by MCRF.
Research and Development
Contribute to the delivery of the MCRF strategies R&I research strategy.
Contribute to the delivery of R&I research strategy.
With the MCRF leadership team, lead on the development of the new MCRF site(s), undertaking
matron responsibilities where required.
Ensure that practice is based on the best available evidence and aligned to Trust Policies and
Guidelines,
Actively participate in the development and implementation of the Trust Nursing, Midwifery and Allied
Health Research Strategy.
Support delivery of strategic projects across MCRF
Contribute to MCRF capacity building, training and education.
Promote the development of the clinical academic workforce.
Contribute to clinical audit and research projects ensuring compliance with research governance.
Contribute to the development of business cases or other proposals for improvements or changes to
MCRF business.
Contribute to increasing research awareness with thin the Trust and promote the local research
opportunities available to patients and their families.
Ensure national policy and strategy is encompassed in development and training programmes
provided for staff in MCRF and R&I.
Actively participate in relevant networks and associated groups and meetings, including the UKCRF Network and NWCRF Alliance.
Communication
Foster a culture where all individuals are able to contribute equally by ensuring effective communication systems, written, verbal and the use of Information Technology is embedded.
Represent the Trust at professional and academic forums.
Be open, honest and transparent, by listening and responding to patient and family concerns.
Provide a visible presence in individual clinical areas and be accessible to patients/families and staff.
Listen & Respond
Monitor compliance of Quality of Care Rounds or alternative initiatives and through the Improving Quality programme support the implementation of action plans and striving for continuous improvements
and best patient care.
Build on and promote the positive reputation of research and the MCRF internally and externally to MFT.
Celebrate Achievement
Contribute to and promote a culture that values all staff recognising and acknowledging achievement and success whilst positively addressing poor performance, succession planning and talent management.
