DesCartes Program (work package 9) is looking for research assistant in UI/UX design and library development. DESCRIPTION

To facilitate the development of the next generation of urban systems, the DesCartes Program is currently developing a software framework that brings together AI components, physics models and data, modelization and control aspects. This framework, the DesCartes Builder, shall play an integral role in developing robust hybrid AI pipelines, as required for the design and deployment of digital twins of urban applications. As a research assistant, you will play a key role in developing the Builder:

• Craft a user-friendly interface:Design an intuitive interface that allows users to define, manipulate and execute the hybrid AI pipelines with flexibility and ease.
• Develop reusable components: Create robust and reusable libraries that will form the foundation of the DesCartes Builder framework.

NGAP Project is looking for a Research Fellow on the Modeling of Fundamental Processes with Optical Non-Linearities

NGAP PROJECT

N-GAP: Nanophotonic GAtes with exciton-Polaritons

One of the main goals in the field of quantum technologies is to achieve quantum computing.

Many technologies and platforms have been suggested to build a quantum computer, including ions, atoms, electrons, and superconducting materials. Among these options, all-integrated photonic platforms that allow creating complex circuitry with a small footprint are very promising.

In N-GAP we will explore and exploit a hybrid state of light and matter, the excitonic polariton, to create a platform for quantum computing. Exciton polaritons, which emerge from the strong-coupling of an exciton and a photon, exhibit Kerr nonlinearities typically three orders of magnitude stronger than that found in standard photonic nonlinear crystals.

The main objective of N-GAP is to further enhance the nonlinearity of the polariton systems to achieve the first experimental realisation of a deterministic CNOT gate based on polariton systems, which is the essential building block of a quantum computer.

Scientific objectives- The post-doc will investigate the potential of optical non-linearities to perform energy-efficient quantum computing, amplification and measurements. She/he will build analytical models describing the joint dynamics of optical non-linearities and propagating pulses of light in the quantum regime of interaction. A fully Hamiltonian dynamics is targeted, unlocking access to light-matter entangled states and the possibility to explore various optimization regimes for the quantum processes at play. The post-doc will realize accurate energy balances between light and matter, and estimate energy costs of fundamental quantum processes, e.g. quantum gates and amplification.

Working environment- The research fellow will be hosted in the group of Alexia Auffèves in MajuLab, CQT, Singapore. The group is pioneer in the modelling of interactions between quantum emitters and propagating pulses of light. She/he will be involved in a network of collaborations with leading experimental groups in quantum computing with light. She/he will integrate the vibrant environment of the Centre for Quantum Technologies, a long-standing powerhouse of quantum. CNRS@CREATE is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Urban Studies to join our SPACE project team.

SPACE PROJECT

The SPACE project is developing a research protocol for infectious disease prediction and prevention in Singapore. The project draws upon analyses of the risk factors and sociospatial patterns that drive dengue and COVID-19 transmission in Singapore, as well as the social and technical skills developed by individuals and community groups in response to disease propagation. Combining insight from the social sciences (geography, architecture and urban design, communication, economics, sociology, public policy) with biology (epidemiology, entomology) and computer science (artificial intelligence, biostatistics), the project will use the concept of “adaptive capacity” (AC) to explore the potential of community-based “latent social capital” (i.e. human, cultural, political, and social) as key assets for adaptive responses to health challenges related to dengue in its interplay with COVID-19.

The project brings together 23 researchers, 10 from France and 13 from five Singaporean universities (NTU, NUS, SUTD, SMU and SUSS). The research will be conducted in Singapore.

DESCRIPTION

Cities are at the forefront of adaptation and mitigation strategies in a wide range of global issues. Over the past decades, climate change and public health more particularly have been increasingly connected as changing environmental conditions pose significant threats to health and health care systems. The propagation of vector-borne infectious diseases, such as dengue, malaria and Zika, and new, emerging diseases, such as Covid-19, have prompted cities to increase their adaptive capacities in terms of prediction, prevention, and preparedness to current and future pandemics.

Building political agency across scales of government, in various national and transnational arenas and through various means (city-to-city cooperation, city networking, city diplomacy) has been a key challenge for cities. Building and sharing real-time data and coordinating public health responses across borders have been facilitated by the use of digital technologies through various types of devices (contact tracing applications, global mobility trackers, temperature screening kiosks and stations, environmental and population surveillance drones, digital platforms and web-based mapping of hotspot areas). Predictive Artificial Intelligence (AI) fed by growing streams of data from various sources along with increased capacity of Machine Learning have allowed improving model robustness. Finally, biotechnologies are also leveraged for improving diagnostics, vaccines and new vector control strategies. This takes place in a context whereby international policy transfer or policy mobility at large are being accelerated worldwide by digital and social media.

Against this backdrop, this postdoctoral research position aims at exploring the ways in which cities in South-East Asia are responding to the emergence and propagation of infectious diseases, both endemic, vector-borne diseases, such as dengue, and new, emerging infectious diseases, such as Covid-19. More particularly, it aims at analyzing the different ways in which knowledge about diseases and public health responses are built, circulated and shared across borders. Emphasis will be put on the use of “smart technologies” (digital technologies based on Big Data, Mobile Internet and AI) for the prevention and management of diseases. Case studies should include Singapore as a main case and a selection of other relevant cities in South-East Asia sharing similar health and environmental conditions. Specific digital technologies and tools may be selected to narrow down the international comparison.

The project’s research methodology may include discourses and/or content analysis of global and national narratives on changing urban environmental and health policies, literature reviews, which may include a scoping review, designing and conducting qualitative interviews with public and private stakeholders in Singapore.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

• A doctoral degree in the appropriate field or discipline, such as urban studies, urban geography, urban planning, sociology, political science, public policy, environmental policy, public health, communication studies and cultural studies.
• The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in methods of qualitative research including interviews, ethnography, focus group discussions, data collection, and analysis.
• Proficiency in English
• Proficiency in one other Singapore’s official languages would be an asset.

The Research Fellow will assist with primary legal research in a variety of legal fields associated with cutting edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology research, from innovation and intellectual property laws to data governance (including access to data, data commons, compliance with data protection laws). The Research Fellow will contribute to the development of best practice guidelines and governance systems and participate in research administrative tasks. Some supervision of junior research staff may be required.

WP3 aims at

supporting the whole Descartes program in order to develop advanced optimization-based solutions in the context of hybrid AI. Any AI system or machine learning algorithm ultimately involves a formulation with an objective or loss function to be minimized. The modelling of the problem as well as the chosen objective function optimization algorithm is crucial to the success of the overall AI task. This is all the more crucial in the context of hybrid AI, which seeks to integrate physics-inspired models with machine learning algorithms. We will address this problem from two complementary angles, namely optimization-based methods and machine learning-based methods.

The Research Fellow (RF) is expected to contribute to the design and engineering of hybrid twin-based simulation and control architectures for urban critical systems using optimization-based techniques. Finally, the RF will contribute to the use cases of Descartes.

DesCartes Program (Work Package 8) is looking for a Research Associate in Information Management & Harvesting: Smart Data for Hybrid Twin Digital Energy Systems.

DESCARTES PROGRAM

The DesCartes programme is developing a hybrid AI, combining Learning, Knowledge and Reasoning, which has good properties (need for less resources and data, security, robustness, fairness, respect for privacy, ethics), and demonstrated on industrial applications of the smart city (digital energy, monitoring of structures, air traffic control).

The program brings together 80 permanent researchers (half from France, half from Singapore), with the support of large industrial groups (Thales SG, EDF SG, ESI group, CETIM Matcor, ARIA etc.).

The research will take place mainly in Singapore, at the premises of CNRS@CREATE, with a competitive salary and generous funding for missions.

Job Description

Develop a methodology to prepare data according to physical constraints, and to adjust physical models to real situations captured by data. The idea will be to combining imperfect data from models, from observations distributed in time and space, exploiting any relevant physical constraints, to produce a more accurate and comprehensive picture of the system as it evolves in time.

State estimation methods of electrical distribution system, especially micro-grids with RES generation and EV charging will be considered. Physical models as well as AI models will be developed based on an existing micro-grid in Singapore from our partner EDF Lab Singapore.
