Job Description:

The Fairbrother Laboratory is seeking a Research Assistant with experience in molecular and cell biology techniques. This candidate will assist with maintaining cell lines and reagents, perform transfections, PCR, western blotting, and protein and DNA extractions. In addition, the Research Assistant will be responsible for preparing equipment and supplies so that experiments in the laboratory can be carried out successfully. Candidate is expected to maintain order in the lab and assist with experiments in collaboration with computational biologists and other lab members.

The Fairbrother Laboratory uses a combination of computational biology and high throughput genomics techniques to identify functional elements in the genome. We seek to understand recognition events important in gene expression (i.e transcription and RNA splicing). Some specific projects include 1) understanding how particular arrangements of sequence elements are read by the splicing machinery, 2) identifying mutations/polymorphisms that disrupt splicing in the human population.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from the date of hire which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• Required: Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years of relevant laboratory experience.

• Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Relevant coursework and basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry. Candidate should be competent in basic molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, electrophoresis and western blotting, and in growing and maintaining mammalian cell cultures.

• Preferred: Specific experience in RNA/DNA purification and analysis, next-generation sequencing, biochemistry, or cellular imaging.

 The Bilingual Research Interviewer position will support the Survey Research Center (SRC) at the Brown University School of Public Health in conducting high quality survey research in English and Spanish.  The SRC is dedicated to conducting survey research in partnerships with university and hospital-based faculty and administrators, state and local government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Research activities for this position will include recruitment, telephone interviews, mailed surveys, and in-person interviews.  Interviews may be with children, adolescents, adults, seniors, and members of multiple cultural and ethnic groups. In addition, research activities may be conducted in multiple locations such as participants’ homes, health care settings, and community-based locations.

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience

• Associates Degree plus 1-3 years of related experience, or equivalent education/work experience, Bachelor's Degree preferred.

The group accomplishes this by working with the Vice President for Research and other Brown leaders to develop and support the university’s research priorities; strengthening internal and external research networks, processes, skills and knowledge to continuously grow capacity for research excellence at Brown; and by increasing external research funding to enable world class research at Brown. 

About the Opportunity

The Project Manager is responsible for successfully developing and submitting the administrative components of complex proposals for priority funding agencies as a member of the Office of Research Strategy and Development in efforts to advance Brown’s strategic plan to grow its research enterprise. 

Reporting to the Associate Director, Research Strategy Development, ORSD, the Project Manager will advise, consult and guide the project management of the administrative processes for mid-large scale, complex research projects across the university. Under the guidance of and in collaboration with the strategic lead on a proposal (an ORSD staff member), the incumbent will work closely with faculty and staff stakeholders in defining the scope, schedule, charter and budget for projects. They will also be expected to work with teams to identify and organize priorities and establish processes and contribute to the ongoing operations as well as develop and document processes and procedures. The incumbent will be expected to approach the work proactively and in an independent manner.

Responsibilities

Project/Proposal Planning and Initiation

• Collaborate with stakeholders to projects that meet the requirements to be included in the scope of the position's efforts. Determine which projects/proposals are in line with areas designated for growth through the strategic efforts of the Provost and VPR.
• Collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in the definition of project scope and objectives
• Support center proposals, instrumentation proposals, and interdisciplinary strategic proposals that are aligned with the Brown University’s research priorities
• Onboard teams: ensure faculty and their staff have the information needed to participate in ORSD-lead projects
• Articulate large-scale, complex projects into detailed project documentation (charters), identifying structured phases and sprints to prioritize speed, improvements and enhancements

Project/Proposal Management

• Formally manage changes to the project scope, schedule and budget
• Formally identify and manage project risk, reporting and escalating issues to project lead and/or Senior Director Research Strategy and Development as needed
• Monitor and track progress of projects, reporting on performance using appropriate tools and techniques
• Manage project resources, make adjustments and improvements to project delivery to address constraints

Qualifications

Education and Experience

The Assistant Director of Research Development  serves in a strategic role within the Office of Research Strategy and Development and advances transdisciplinary collaboration and innovation by strategically coordinating the development of complex research teams and their funding proposals.  The incumbent will support current and develop emerging research strengths and capabilities across campus; lead the development of opportunities for strengthening faculty research and teaming capabilities including grant writing workshops and networking events, ideation meetings and brainstorming sessions; provide research development support for large scale multi-institutional proposals; will identify external funding opportunities and proactively build relationships among collaborating entities both internally and external to Brown. Additionally, the  Assistant Director of Research Development  is responsible for developing and maintaining ongoing relationships with strategic partners, locally and globally.  Finally, working with senior leaders from across campus, this position will be the strategic point person for institutional level proposals.

Responsibilities:

Enable funding for priority research by leading investigators in the preparation of large scale (>$5M) proposals for federal funding

In collaboration with the Research Strategy and Development team, while ensuring projects are in line with areas designated for growth through the strategic efforts of the Provost and VPR, identify resources needed for successful large scale proposal development and provide support as needed. Lead team building, project development, and project management roles to advance research aims and ensure success of research teams. Specialize in building complex proposals involving multiple researchers, often with collaborations and budgets spanning multiple departments, campuses, or institutions. Determine sponsor requirements and provide strategic advice for meeting sponsor requirements. Coordinate with department grant managers. Coach faculty throughout the proposal development process. Advise on specialized services (e.g. broader impacts, diversity plans, cost sharing, management plans) and identify appropriate sources of services. Draft letters of support or institutional commitment from university leaders and facilitate the letter approval process. Where internal or external professional services are needed (e.g. evaluator) identify provider and coordinate services. Provide template language on Brown services and facilities. Review drafts of proposals for responsiveness to sponsor requirements and goals.

Provide research leadership by supporting strategic projects for the Office of Research Strategy and Development

Design, develop and direct events at Brown to connect potential partners to research at Brown; strategically preparing teams in advance of and during proposal preparation. This includes outreach to federal agencies and national laboratories. While representing Brown, engage with federal agencies at workshops, open houses, and /or proposers’ days. Design and establish a database of strategic partnerships ranging from local to global partners, including local industries, national labs, non-profits, and federal agencies. Ensure funding and/or collaboration opportunities are brought to the attention of relevant faculty and department leadership.

Provide strategic intelligence on current best practices within research development, including team science, process optimization and other kinds of research development support.

Lead the submission of proposals for broad, university-wide proposals.

Oversee the proposal development process of institutional level proposals including proposal narrative development, editing, proofreading, integrating content from multiple authors, coordinating meetings with project team members, and evaluating complex funding solicitations to ensure compliance.  Coordinate and collaborate with grants and finance administrators within the department submitting the proposal and within relevant OVPR offices, particularly pre-award in the Office of Sponsored Projects.

Education
Required: 

• Graduate degree;  STEM field preferred and at least 5-7 years of related experience in a university or research institute or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in leading large scale multi-institutional proposal development projects

Experience

Position Purpose:

The research assistant (RA) will assist in conducting a project that involves studying how green space is associated with sleep and mental health in children. The study involves working with children in order to assess their exposure to green spaces, sleep behavior and mental health through the wearing of devices and administration of surveys. Work activities will involve traveling within Rhode Island to perform data collection visits with participants and their guardians either at their residence or neutral off-site locations, conducting in-person or zoom-based research qualitative interviews, programming and administering surveys, managing participant compensation, and aiding recruitment efforts through flyer distribution and collection, and social media management. The RA will be required to have their own transportation and will be compensated for the mileage.

About the Opportunity:

The Annenberg Institute’s Rhode Island Education Research Team brings together local education leaders and researchers to solve pressing educational challenges, with a specific focus on the educator workforce, professional learning, student learning acceleration, and student engagement. Drawing on the complementary expertise and earned trust of partners, we seek to improve Rhode Island student and school experiences through stronger use of data and evidence while producing research that has impact on a national scale.

Responsibilities:

The Research Associate is responsible for developing and at times leading key research analysis projects with local districts and the Rhode Island Department of Education to understand and address questions about student well-being, academic outcomes, and the teacher workforce. 

This position requires a strong independent work ethic, interest in education, ability to collaborate with the research team and external partners, commitment to equity, and quantitative research skills. Candidates must possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community as part of an organization that centers equity in its work.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in education, economics or related social science fields and 1-2 years
of research experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; master’s degree preferred
• A strong quantitative background
• Experience in Stata (or other software like Python or R) to analyze data
• Strong interest in education research
• Ability to work independently or as a member of a team

Competencies:

• Experience with data management and statistical analysis

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet deadlines

• Excellent judgement and ability to work independently with minimal supervision

• Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.

• Skills with Google suite apps

• Skill/competency with statistical software (e.g., STATA, R).

• The incumbent must have a demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

This is a fixed term position with the possibility of renewal annually. This position is contingent on funding.
