BD’s IDEA Tempe Campus, located in Tempe, Arizona helps bring high-impact, new-to-world innovations into development. The Senior Engineer I will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions.
Working with the leadership of BD’s Digital Engineering, 3D Printing & Prototyping team, this is a technical position where the engineer will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the BD R&D portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading, planning and performing 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing solutions in support of complex technical problems. The skills for technological management, hands-on learning, and communication to both internal and external collaborators (e.g., partners) is required. A professional background in multiple 3D Printing and/or Additive Manufacturing systems and processes is required. The ideal candidate should have a hand on experience using modern CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks or other equivalent 3D modeling) and related software packages (e.g., Magics, Netfabb). The candidate will understand and have hands on experience with 3D printing processes from the front end (e.g., print orientation, setup, printer operation), through the back-end (e.g., support removal, post processing, shipping), safe laboratory practices.
The Senior Engineer I must be able to effectively collaborate with team members, local and remote, from varying backgrounds and seniority levels. They should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have a passion for 3D Printing with a drive to learn and grow.
Job Responsibilities: (Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)
Provide leadership and technical support to local team members to advance 3D printing operations.
Collaborate with multi-functional team members (e.g., BD partners, 3DP&P team members) both local and remote to provide solutions and advance projects.
Apply in-depth knowledge of 3D printing technologies or systems to produce high quality, accurate 3D printed components. Be the expert onsite on the ins and outs of each system and the related software in the 3D printing lab space.
Operate a variety of 3D printers, i.e. – Stereolithography, Polyjet, extrusion, etc., and develop expertise in the use of the 3D printing technologies for medical product applications.
Coordinate 3D printing activities to ensure prompt turnaround of job requests.
Apply proven methods of post processing to maintain accuracy, aesthetics, biocompatibility, mechanical properties, etc. Actively research and enhance these techniques when possible.
Analyze system accuracy data, logs, etc. and develop measurement processes to continuously improve component accuracy.
Education and Experience:
Required BS in Engineering, mathematics, metrology or equivalent plus 6 years relevant industry experience. Engineering degree is preferred or;
MS/Ph.D plus 4 years relevant industry experience or Ph.D. plus 2 years relevant industry experience
Experience in 3D printing required: 5+years preferred
Experience with CAD software required: 5+ years preferred
Experience working in laboratory environment.
Medical industry experience is preferred.
Knowledge & Skills:
REQUIRED:
3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing (e.g., SLA, PolyJet, FDM)
Graphical design (e.g., SolidWorks or other equivalent 3D modeling)
MS Office (Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
Ability to plan and operate to meet tight scheduling.
Experience with 3D printing post processing methods.
Experience collaborating and contributing to multidisciplinary teams, including the ability to influence without direct authority.
Experience with Digital Calipers or similar measuring devices.
Safety in a laboratory setting.
Ability to adapt quickly to change.
Strong oral and written communication skills and team collaboration skills
Ability to use personal computers for word processing and data manipulation.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Thorough understanding of laboratory safety requirements and the SDS System.
PREFERRED:
Experience working under a quality system.
Knowledge of statistics and use of statistical packages for analyzing datasets.
Experience with optical or coordinate measuring systems.
Knowledge of materials science related to plastics.
Experience with effective packaging and shipping practices.
Thorough understanding of Design of Experiment principles and testing methodology as well as effective interpersonal and organizational skills is required.
Experience collaborating and contributing to multidisciplinary teams, including the ability to influence without direct authority.
Ability to adapt quickly to changes in program and project priorities.
Ability to manage diverse tasks and issues simultaneously, using a “hands-on” approach in a fast-paced environment.
