Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching and acute trusts, and is a world renowned centre of clinical excellence. Many surgical services are multisite, with the bulk of the emergency work being undertaken at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and with predominantly elective surgical services at the Churchill Hospital and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre; a small-moderate volume of work is undertaken at the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.
The Geratology Department at OUH is a dynamic and progressive department at the centre of large tertiary referral teaching hospital, with many specialist surgical facilities. We aim to provide outstanding care to the growing number of both older people with acute medical illnesses and those undergoing surgery, recognising the challenges this increasingly frail surgical population pose. We can offer you a stimulating working environment and a chance to develop and further your career.
12 months working within areas of Geriatric Medicine, including acute in-patient wards and speciality out-patient clinics. There are 4 Complex Medicine Unit (CMU) wards, which provide high quality in patient, consultant led care to acutely unwell, multi-morbid complex patients. There are daily board rounds which provide the opportunity to work alongside and learn from other allied health professionals which form the wider MDT.
Successful applicants may be asked to attend speciality out patient clinics which include general geriatric medicine, falls, memory and Parkinson’s Disease clinics.
Subject to applicants experience there will also be opportunity to work in out of hours geratology rotas, including stroke thrombolysis.
12 months working within areas of the perioperative medicine service. OUH has an established perioperative medicine service in the acute surgical emergency unit (SEU) and hip fractures. Over the last few years the perioperative medicine service has expanded to provide consultant-led medical perioperative care to the major trauma, vascular services and elective orthopaedics. It also contributes to the TAVI MDT. The perioperative physicians have become an essential part of the surgical department, working collaboratively with the surgeons, anaesthetists and the multidisciplinary team. The service provides acute medical and post-operative care, optimising patients for surgery and co-ordinating discharge planning for complex patients.
The perioperative consultants (who are from an acute medicine, HDU, renal and geriatric medicine background) are supported by a geriatric medicine SpR and FY2 doctor in trauma, and a medical middle grade doctor (CMT, FY2 or GPVTS) in SEU.
There will be the opportunity to attend regular Geratology departmental teaching and both Geratology and surgical governance, mortality and morbidity meetings and MDTs.
