We are looking for an experienced Technician who can join our team . You will be treating Patients that come from ED, Wards & Clinics. Every patient will offer a different challenge for you to show your empathy , ability to complete our Doctors request and make our patients feel at ease while they recieve the best treatment you are capable of.
We will consider applicants that have relevant experience with working with patients, but not have casting experience.

This will include;
Slabs
Below elbow, Above elbow, Below knee, Above knee, Cylinder, U- slab, Volar and ulna gutter.
Casts
Colles, Scaphoid, Bennett’s, Above and Below elbow, Above and Below knee, Cylinder, Gaiter, Sugar- tong, Sarmiento, Hip Spica, Paediatric serial casts, Shoulder spica, Bootee / Slipper, Hanging casts. T.L.S.O. Cast braces (hinged casts) for the knee and elbow.
Appliances that have to be fitted: these include wrist braces, knee braces, corsets, collars, humeral braces, ankle resting splints, foot-up splints, Aircast boots & ankle braces, insoles, and heel pads.
To be aware of, implement and comply with the Trust’s Infection control, Manual Handling, and other Procedures, Policies, Protocols.

REPORTS TO: Plaster Services Manager
HOURS: 37.5 To fit within shifts on a 5 day Rota
JOB SUMMARY
Plaster Technicians treat Patients directly, following Doctors instructions. There will be situations where a Technician will have to make their own judgment on the most appropriate method of applying a cast / splint, dependant on the patient’s level of compliance. Technicians work closely with Doctors, who will often wish to discuss the prescribed treatment with the Technician.
The Plaster Room operates an “open door” facility where Patients with cast / splint problems can attend without the need of an appointment. Plaster Technicians have to be able to respond to the issues raised and effectively correct the problem in a professional and sympathetic manner.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Aims

1. Application and removal of casts in Plaster of Paris, Fibreglass, Polyester.

8 Appliances may have to be made. This process includes measuring, cutting, trimming and moulding the synthetic casting material.
1. Giving Patients written and verbal instructions and advice regarding their casts and splints
10 Ability to use, after training where necessary, equipment to remove casts (oscillating saw), Hand tools (cutters & spreaders).
1. Removal of Rings.
1. Other duties will include Maintaining Infection Control levels of cleanliness. Tidying of the workplace, to maintain a safe working environment. Changing of laundry. Emptying laundry bags.

1. To be able to adapt to changes in procedure and new technology. To be prepared to be trained on an on-going basis to maintain a high level of competence to provide the service requirements of quality treatment and patient satisfaction.
OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
To work in a small team of Technicians treating Patients from Wards, Fracture clinic, A&E, GP’s, other Outpatient depts. and Patients returning with problems regarding casts / splints.
To work within the Guidance from Consultants, non-consultant grades and other allied health professional, but also have the autonomy to decide on the best application procedure for the individual Patient.
To work under the Guidance of the Services Manager and be able to discuss work related issues, constructively
BUSINESS PLANNING AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
To be aware of financial, business constraints and procedures.
To be aware of the need to work in a manner that is responsible for the cost, and the best treatment for Patients.
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
To be aware of the Trust’s Policies and Procedures relating to Human Resource issues.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
The post-holder will have an appraisal to determine their individual Education and Training needs.
RISK MANAGEMENT
To be aware of the Trust’s Policies regarding Risk management.
All Trust employees must attend Mandatory Training to meet this requirement
EQUIPMENT
• Ensure all equipment has been regularly maintained
• Ensure all equipment is used in accordance with the manufacturers instructions
• Ensure any equipment found to be faulty/unsafe should be removed from use and reported to the appropriate authority
COMPETENCY BASED APPRAISAL
The post holder will be appraised on an annual basis and the process will include a review of the past year’s performance, setting of aims and objectives for the coming year and identification of educational needs.
TRAINING
All staff will undertake such training as is necessary to perform the duties in the Job Description. Ongoing Training will be met as the need arises.
