An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic pharmacist with excellent clinical and interpersonal skills to lead a high-quality clinical pharmacy service to Adult Diabetes Services at UCLH.

Adult Diabetes Services are part of the Medical Specialties Division, which incorporates a wide range of different clinical specialties, with both an inpatient and outpatient focus.


The Adult Diabetes Service consists of a multidisciplinary team of consultants, specialist registrars, associate specialists, clinical nurse specialists, dieticians and podiatrists working together closely to support and improve the health of people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes across inpatient and outpatient care settings.

The post holder will work as part of the Medicine and Emergency Services pharmacy team to deliver a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to Adult Diabetes Services, and where relevant the Medical Specialties Division, and collaborate with primary care and other organisations across the North Central London Integrated Care System, to improve patient care in hospital and community settings.

You will lead the day-to-day clinical pharmacy service to the UCLH Adult Diabetes Services, working closely with the Adult Diabetes team and wider MDT to improve the care of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

You will attend relevant MDT clinical huddles and ward rounds to promote safe practice by reducing medicines related harm during transitions of care, and drive cost effective and evidence-based practice.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL AND PHYSICAL RESOURCES Provision of detailed evaluated reports on drug expenditure to the Divisional Finance Manager, General Manager, and Clinical Head of Service Identify options for reducing drug expenditure. Forecasting new drug developments, and identify changes in prescribing practice that may impact on the drugs budget. Contributing to the annual pharmacy department drug cost pressure document Interpreting published data on new drugs for use within nephrology, dialysis, transplantation and urology, and to prepare evaluations and present applications to the Drugs, Therapeutics Committee. To communicate relevant decisions back to the specialty care group. Liaising with the key decision makers (senior managers, CCGs, commissioners) to ensure provision of funding for high-cost drugs i.e. Immunosuppression and treatment of renal anaemia and CKD-MBD within the Directorate. 5. RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEADING AND MANAGING To share expertise with healthcare professionals on a nationwide level through professional conferences, forum and bodies. To motivate and inspire others in order to create and maintain a good working environment and facilitate staff retention To plan and organise the provision of the clinical pharmacy service to the renal wards and units, including the day-to-day allocation of the workload To support and facilitate the development of junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians To deputise for the Lead Pharmacist, Renal Services in his/her absence To support the Lead Pharmacist, Renal Services in the recruitment of staff To manage difficult and ambiguous situations and be aware of ethical dilemmas that may present in patient care and provide support and guidance to colleagues in any decision-making process. To attend and be active participant in relevant clinical and managerial groups divisionally, corporately and externally, in order to ensure the delivery of best care to patients. To represent pharmacy and act as link person at relevant meetings and conferences and disseminate knowledge of developments to other staff. eg. London Renal Pharmacy Group, UK Renal Pharmacy Group, BTS, BRS. 6. RESPONSIBILITY FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES To prepare reports in response to freedom of information act enquiries. To prepare drug expenditure reports To be competent in the use of JAC pharmacy system, Cerner and other relevant hospital IT systems To be compliant with Trust Data Protection and Patient Confidentiality policies Responsible to keep all relevant databases (eg high cost drugs) up to date. To assist in the implementation and be competent in the use of the electronic prescribing and administration system (EPMA) within the specialist areas. 7. RESPONSIBILITY FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT To support relevant medical, nursing and pharmacy staff to ensure that nephrology, dialysis, transplantation and urology trials are run efficiently and effectively. To undertake and co-ordinate clinical research and audit projects and publish or present these findings. To supervise and advise other members of the pharmacy team research projects. To develop a personal research portfolio. To implement findings of research into clinical practice. 8. EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES To act as a resource for renal pharmacy issues across the trust and community where appropriate. To contribute to the education and training of junior doctors in the safe and effective use of medicines in patients with renal impairment. To develop, implement and maintain a renal drugs knowledge and competency learning package for nurses working on the renal unit. To participate in the development of clinical based pharmacy training programmes To contribute to the departmental appraisal and development programme for junior pharmacists and technicians. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to experience and work with

NICU

NTS - Neonatal Transfer service

This fellow job has come up as part of the NICU expansion in which we have opened 45 cots to provide all levels of neonatal care at the Royal London Hospital. We are a tertiary centre and take referrals from all over the North East London region.

The posts will be for a period of 12 months with further extension depending upon the clinical performance

Training will be provided as appropriate for the individual in accordance with the syllabus for trainees in neonatal medicine following discussion with their educational supervisor. In general training opportunities occur in the context of:

Consultant led ward rounds twice daily
Registrar led ward rounds in second half of post dependent on experience
Practical supervision
Concise topic teaching two mornings per week
Dedicated X-ray meeting
A weekly academic ward round and case presentation/seminar
Training in cranial ultrasound and echocardiography

Specialist clinics: Neurodevelopmental/Respiratory/Cardiology
3 hours protected teaching per week

Weekly general paediatric teaching sessions covering a wide range of topics
Regular multidisciplinary simulation training

A dedicated service for neonatal transport in London is based at The Royal London Hospital. The team functions autonomously but there are opportunities for individuals to rotate into the transport service for periods of time to receive training and experience in this field of neonatal care.
