The incumbent reports to the Chief of the service. Participates actively in the management of the office of the Section Chief Nurse by performing a wide range of administrative, analytical, and budgeting functions using office automation systems, which generate output of reports, database management, word processing, administrative forms, and organizing logistics for meetings and programs.

Major duties:

The Urology Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for the care and administrative needs of the Surgery Service patient in both the inpatient and outpatient setting of the urology section. The PA also functions as a coordinator between the attending physician and the other team members to include Nursing, Social Work, Rehabilitative Services and Dietician. The PA will also be directly responsible to the Urologists for all clinical and administrative duties.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Provide medical and surgical care for both inpatients and outpatients in the urology section. These patients often have concomitant medical problems and are multi-symptomatic. The PA shall coordinate patient care programs based upon the admitting chief complaint and shall perform the following duties:
  • Admission History and physicals, admission orders, aftercare plans and discharge summaries under direction of Urologist.
    Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies.

Duties:

• Monitors (BMS) for bed readiness relative to patient tracking through-put information on the computerized bed board. Monitoring allows the (BFC) to know bed capacity and available bed locations for making informed decisions about the hospital's census based on EMS bed cleaning data. (BMS) streamlines bed turnover, improves through-put, and provides a clear picture of the hospital's capacity in real time.
• Ensures that bed turnover (the time a bed is vacated) to the time it is cleaned, and pull times (the time between a patient being admitted to the hospital and reaching a bed).
• Communicates EMS work in progress for knowing capacity constraints that lead to increased diversions, longer waiting periods, as well as holds and other throughput challenges.
• Monitors the timeliness of notification of patient discharges, timely turn around of discharge beds, timely assignment of ready beds, and timely movement of patients to ready beds for allowing the (BFC) to coordinate patient through-put.

The Physician Assistant in Orthopedics, in collaboration with the interprofessional team, manages the care of Veterans in the Orthopedics Service. This includes evaluation of new orthopedic consults, pre- and post-operative outpatient management, and non-operative management of orthopedic issues. The PA possesses clinical expertise in the assessment and management of fractures, degenerative joint disease, injuries within the realm of sport medicine as well as hand trauma and other pathology. The PA's primary practice setting will be in a face-to-face clinic at the Rockford Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). The PA will also conduct telemedicine visits.
