4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Clinical Provide high quality care as an expert practitioner and act as a role model and resource for advice, support and guidance. Provides specialised advice contributing to the diagnosis and care of patients. Where appropriate to the services patient demographic, to developmentally appropriate, young person friendly healthcare to support young people; including support for transition, as they move from children into adult services. Responsible for ensuring the setting of and monitoring of standards as well as seeking continuous opportunity to improve standards and the quality of patient care. Undertake clinical procedures where dexterity and accuracy are required. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care and treatments using specialist clinical knowledge and clinical skills. Make clinical assessments and treatment decisions within clearly defined policies and protocols. Organise own clinical workload. Undertake duties on wards or departments as and when required by service demands or patient need. Supervise clinical staff to promote the delivery of excellent clinical standards. Receives supervision of clinical and managerial skills from appropriate leader. Act in accordance with the relevant professional body i.e. NMC Fulfil the requirements as directed by the nursing and midwifery council to main and revalidate registration. Ensure and promote the maintenance of a safe, clean, and secure working environment. Act in such a way that always safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults. Is familiar with and adheres to, the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) safeguarding policies. Raise concerns regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT whistleblowing policy and supporting processes. Ensure that documentation standards are maintained in accordance with NMC and LTHT guidelines, whether written or computerised. Promote and maintain positive working relationships between all staff, internal and external to the trust, involved in the care of patients. Education and Training Ensure all staff have an individual performance development plan. Participate in own and others appraisals. Ensure all nursing staff maintain mandatory training requirement. Ensure implementation of the Trust s Study Leave policy Ensure the induction and development of staff. Promote a positive learning environment within the clinical area. Maintain detailed and accurate records regarding staff education and attendance management. Participate in specialist training and education at post-graduate level within the University setting as agreed with Matron. Undertake role specific training and competencies. Provide education and training to patients and their carers. Keep up to date with developments and advances within the speciality. Collaborate with other team members in clinical areas to ensure provision of education is clear and robust. Mentorship and supervision of junior staff. Support staff to deliver evidence based practice and research activities to further enhance patient care. Leadership Provide leadership to the clinical team and working with Matron, develop new roles/ways of working. Provide a visible clinical lead and role model to the nursing and wider team by delivering high quality compassionate care. Delegate and empower staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care to patients as an expert practitioner. Deliver a positive patient experience. Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of junior staff, trainees and students within the specialist team. Line manages the nursing team, including recruitment, performance management and workforce planning. Supervise staff rostering, ensuring adequate skill mix. Motivate the staff to deliver high quality care. Supervise clinician delivery of care competencies. Anticipate problems and take preventative or mitigating actions or have a contingency plan available. Respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events. Deliver an effective quality service with budgetary constraint and work with the matron to deliver safe, cost-effective care within the delegated budget. Ensure the workload and performance monitoring data for the team is collected, collated and utilised to ensure the effective and efficient work of the team. Reviews this information with Matron on a regular basis. Work with the Matron in the development of specific elements of nursing practice, reflecting the CSU and Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health professionals business plan. Engage users and carers views on service delivery and development. Propose, develop and implement policy, protocols and practice guidelines as specific to the clinical speciality. Exercise personal duty of care in relation to equipment, resource and stock control and utilising equipment and supplies appropriately. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after contact with patients and their environment. 8. This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed security and safer working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system 9. TRAINING AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional Development remains a priority. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS i) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work within a fast-paced environment with continuing evolvement of physical effort required. Dexterity to perform intricate emergency treatments. IT skills to effectively navigate IT systems use the Emergency Department. Provide personal cares to patients including manual handling of patients. Complete physical clinical duties working in care teams or resus. Assist with physical clinical treatments such as manipulations, treatment application and resuscitation. . ii) MENTAL EFFORT: Full concentration or dull rostered duty to ensure safe care always provided. Ability to prioritise and manage personal pressures due to demanding nature of environment. iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT: Calm and measured overview of a highly fluctuating department of demand and acuity. Resilience to lead the team through departmental demands and acute or distressing presentations. Seek support and signpost support if required following daily exposure to distressing presentations or significant demands upon the department. Use of debrief and continued reflection. Robust coping and recovery mechanisms to support psychological safety.
