Senior Nurse Developmental Role

We strongly encourage applications from newly qualified registered nurses, or those close to obtaining qualified status, who will initially be offered a preceptorship position (Agenda for Change Band 5) and then supported to be eligible to move into the Senior Nurse position (Agenda for Change Band 6).

In a preceptorship role, this structure will be used to support the agreement of a Personal Development Plan within the 12 weeks of starting your role with us. It is intended to support staff wellbeing, encourage the retention of quality staff and support individuals within the custodial setting with greater consistency of care.

It is expected that you will have the relevant post-qualification experience before applying to progress to Band 6.

Bristol Children’s PICU is a 18 bedded unit providing full intensive care services to the Southwest of England and cardiac surgical services to the Southwest and South Wales. BRHC is a designated paediatric trauma and burns centre with all specialties other than transplantation on site.

The post would involve clinical duties on PICU as well as possibly in paediatric high dependency and the regional transport service.

Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine (ST4+) –80:20Research

The senior clinical fellow posts include 80% time working in the adult emergency department and 20% paid time to develop in a specialist interest of the successful candidate’s choice. The posts are open as OOPT/E for EM HSTs and as stand-alone posts for non-trainees, and can be 100% EM if required. We are also open to SAS and Specialty Doctors if that suits.

The posts provide an ideal opportunity for the successful candidates to develop their own specialist interests while working in a busy inner city university hospital, with teaching and research responsibilities and are based in the adult side of the department.

Applicants should hold a relevant postgraduate qualification (MRCEM, MRCP, MRCS, FRCA or equivalent), and should be ST4 + or equivalent, having completed a minimum of 3 years in approved SHO posts (Post Foundation Medicine) or equivalent in relevant acute specialities including at least 1 year in Emergency Medicine.

The post will be a combination of service provision including out of hours and paid time to develop a specialist interest. The candidate to combine a job in Emergency Medicine with a 20% time allowance for a specialist interest. Clinical

The reception, diagnosis and emergency treatment of patients presenting to the adult Emergency Department. The successful candidate will be given supervision and support from senior medical staff to develop competency in the autonomous clinical management of these patients whilst ensuring patient safety. This post is based in the adult Emergency Department and no sessions will be undertaken in the paediatric Emergency Department.

There is close liaison between ED and ICU at BRI. Patients referred to Specialist Units within the hospital are the responsibility of that specialist team, who will see the patient in the Emergency Department and arrange appropriate care. However, medical and nursing staff in the ED are responsible for any emergency care necessary. This shared care is seamless and collaborative.

Managerial

The management responsibility of the post holder will be to the Clinical Director who is responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

The post holder must be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active part in their implementation, including audit. Clinical audit is established at the BRI. They will participate in at least one supervised audit project during the 12 month post and will be encouraged to attend interdisciplinary clinical governance meetings

On-Call Commitment

In ED the roster is a full shift system. Shifts are a balanced mix of earlies, mids, lates, and nights. The post’s pay will be calculated by HR and will be compliant with the new regulations set in Aug 2017.

A full-time substantive role, has arisen for a suitably qualified enthusiastic person to join our team of physiologists in the Sleep Unit within the Respiratory Medicine Department at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

The ideal applicant will have a BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent qualification and have successfully completed ARTP Parts I & II or Practitioner level exam. They should also have relevant experience in sleep studies.

As well as carrying out clinical investigations the role will involve deputising for the Lead Clinical Physiologist, assisting with service development, providing supervision and ongoing education for other members of staff and students on placement within the department. You should have the ability to work flexibly, be able to work with your own initiative and enjoy working as part of a team. A keen eye for detail and accuracy is also required. You will be expected to work closely with other healthcare professionals, including respiratory consultants, nurses and physiotherapists.

This role is for 37.5 hours per week. There can be some flexibility regarding the exact hours to be worked, although there is the requirement for some evening (late shift) working.

The Post holder will:
• Act as an expert resource and is responsible for ensuring all elements of set up are completed in accordance with UK and EU legal requirements, Trust policies and ICH-GCP or IS0 14155, as appropriate, whether conducted personally or through appropriate delegation.
• Be responsible for ensuring the feasibility procedures undertaken are sufficient to ensure all studies undertaken are within the scope of the unit and the available resources.
• Support the PI and trials team in ensuring research trials are run in line with regulatory requirements.
• Be responsible for ensuring all studies are registered with the R+D department and that full Trust approval, in addition to ethics approval, has been obtained prior to commencement of the study.
• Work with the R+D department in contract negotiations
• Liaise with the NIHR Clinical Research Network throughout the study and facilitate the lines of communication between the Trust / R+D and the NIHR CRN.
• Has a comprehensive knowledge of the financial issues relating to the undertaking of clinical research.
• Be expected to undertake detailed costing of studies to ensure all costs related to the study are identified prior to Trust approval being given.
• Involved in the financial processes associated with co-ordinating research studies.
• Be responsible for project managing all the studies in set up,
• Is expected to identify any blockages to study set up and work with R+D to identify strategies to mitigate them.
• Is expected to establish and update Standard Operating Procedures and supporting the development of local and national policies for research.
• Ensure compilation and maintenance of all site files, in accordance with ICH-GCP.
• Maintain a register and documentation of ICH-GCP for all research active staff, including documentation of ongoing training pertaining to their specific studies.
• Lead and line manage a team of research delivery staff to deliver a portfolio of clinical research.
• Budget management.

Clinical Trial Running
• Support local Principal Investigators in meeting their responsibilities outlined in the Research Governance Framework, Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations
• Ensure correct maintenance of Investigator Site File(s) and completion of Case Report File / eCRF with a high degree of accuracy.
• To understand and apply in practice the legal and regulatory requirements related to gaining and maintaining valid informed consent. This will include, where appropriate, children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
• Project manage the assignments to ensure all visits, observations, and interventions with the participants in accordance with the procedures and schedule of the study protocol.
• Acts in the best interests of the research subjects to ensure their rights are upheld.
• Ensure Protocol amendments are incorporated into research practice.
• Acts as an expert resource for staff in relation to the financial management of clinical research studies.
• Uses expert judgement in relation to competing demands for funding / resources
• Acts as an expert resource to PIs in ensuring all Adverse Events and Serious adverse events are reported in line with ICH-GCP, ISO 14155 and Trust policy.
• Is expected to identify any blockages to recruitment and the running of the trial and work with R+D, and where appropriate liaise with the NIHR Clinical Research Network, to identify strategies to mitigate them.
• Ensure that all equipment used in all the trials are appropriately calibrated and be responsible for the retention of supporting documentation.
• Support the PI in ensuring all reporting to regulatory bodies and Research Networks (if applicable) is done in a timely manner.
• Be responsible for ensuring the submission of monthly recruitment / accrual figures to the appointed person at NBT / NIHR Clinical Research Network
• Works within the range of research guidelines, ethical principles, and protocols, whilst adhering to organisational policies and procedures.
• Always observes the confidentiality of patient information, in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott regulations.
• Communicates to R+D / NIHR Clinical Research Network lead regarding research subjects, trial progress, workload issues and personal development.

Communication:
• To support the triaging of referrals by liaising with key clinical staff
• Manage patient communications both via telephone and through Trust systems to create letters, emails and text reminders
• Act as a point of contact for queries from clinical and non-clinical staff
• Liaise with clinical and non-clinical teams across the Trust via telephone and email
• Escalate patient queries, capacity problems and general issues to the role’s line manager or relevant clinical staff as appropriate
• Communicate changes to clinics and appointments to patients as instructed, often at short notice

Patient Care:
• To show a caring and professional approach towards patients, relatives and carers. This may require acting with resilience to deal with sometimes distressed patients and relatives in a professional and empathetic manner

Organising and Planning:
• Implement the policy for patients who do not attend (DNA) their appointment
• To manage and monitor all outstanding appointment requests through the Trust’s Patient Administration System (PAS) and escalate any issues immediately to your manager
• Ensure clinic lists are effectively utilised in discussion with the appropriate clinician and manager, and rebook any cancelled appointment slots
• Attend appropriate meetings as required by the role’s line manager
