The Assistant Research Practitioner will work collaboratively within a team of Research Nurses and Practitioners working on NIHR portfolio, commercial and academic studies within a flexible research workforce to ensure a seamless care for research participants at the trust covering a 24 hour 7 day service.

The Assistance Research Practitioner will communicate with patients and relatives in regard to research participation under the supervision and guidance of the research nurse team. The post holder will assist in the collection and management of data and assist in the timely reporting of information to the relevant bodies. Flexibility is essential as the post holder may work in numerous clinical areas across the trust which will be determined by the research study workload and activity. The post holder adheres to departmental, hospital and National Institute for Health Research policies, established health professional procedures and practices.

1. The Assistance Research Practitioner will assist with programmes for recruitment, enrolment, screening and retention of research subjects for all research studies and act as a lead for observational studies as appropriate in accordance with the protocol and International Conference on Harmonisation of technical requirements for Registration of Pharmaceuticals for human use (ICH) God Clinical Practice Standards.

2. The Assistant research Practitioner will assist the team in the implementation of protocols in accordance with research parameters as set out by the Chief and Principle Investigators.

3. The Assistant Research Practitioner will contribute to appropriate data collection systems for patient data and monitoring data., in accordance with the research protocol.

4. The Assistance Research Practitioner will maintain good liaison with research subjects using excellent communication skills by telephone or face to face, in either hospital or community settings, keeping documented evidence of the same.

5. The Assistance Research Practitioner collaborates with Investigators, Regulatory bodies and ancillary departments.

7. To liaise with the multidisciplinary team as appropriate in the delivery of support and care to the patients.

The post-holder will be responsible for ensuring patients treatments, assessments (including sample collections), follow-ups and data collection are conducted according to the appropriate research protocols ensuring all clinical research activity is ICH GCP and UK Policy Framework in Health and Social Care compliant. The postholder must be able to prioritise research activity as necessary thus ensuring study timelines and recruitment targets are met The postholder will be expected to provide information and support for participants and their carers involved in our research projects ensuring that they are at the centre of everything we do. The postholder will maintain a high standard of patient care in line with NMC Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to Layton Medical Centre policies and procedures. You will be expected to work on a daily basis with minimum supervision, but you may also be asked to provide mentorship /clinical supervision to more junior members of the team as required and as appropriate. You will also be expected to provide back up to other members of the team as required. As part of the role you may be required to visit other NHS sites and participants homes. The post holder will have strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, excellent time management and organisational skills and be able to work under pressure. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES To communicate information about studies according to specific protocols and guidelines. To ensure participants/carers are provided with written information relevant to the research study and are given the opportunity to discuss the research study or clinical trial adequately at the outset and during the course of the research or clinical trial in which they are being asked to participate (i.e. informed consent). The postholder must be highly proficient in IT skills as we utilise multiple electronic systems on a daily basis. You will be expected to provide information/reports on recruitment as required. Maintain accurate patient trial documentation, complete Case Report Forms, which includes the extensive use of electronic data capture systems and ensure relevant information is recorded in patient's medical notes. Perform phlebotomy, and record ECGs where appropriate. With appropriate training, process and dispatch biological samples as required. Administer trial medication, as required. Observe patients and monitor treatment toxicity/side effects; escalating findings accordingly. Report all adverse events/serious adverse events that occur in a timely manner as part of the clinical research in accordance with our procedures for pharmacovigilance, the trial protocol and your delegated responsibilities. OTHER DUTIES To attend internal and stakeholder meetings as appropriate including sponsor and investigator meetings for specific research studies. To provide line management to junior staff if required To provide training to non-clinical research staff if required. To liaise with other research staff locally and nationally. Provide annual leave and sickness cover for others in the team To undertake any other duties, which may be required from time to time, as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and needs of the service. To provide support to the GP Practice should the service demand. Cardiology Research Fellow required to commence ASAP on a fixed term contract for 12 months.

This is not an approved training position, however you will receive the following;
• Named educational supervisor

• Induction and bespoke new starter induction pack outlining internal training courses/opportunities available to doctors in these non-approved training positions
Individual training plan

• NHS e-portfolio (Division will fund but needs to be in contract that it will be recovered if leave before agreed end of contract)

• Appraisal at 6 months and individual access to e-appraisal system

• Support towards obtaining Alternative Certificate confirming achievement of competencies to aid those who want to access a recognised training position in the future.

The post is full time Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week (no fixed on-call commitment). The post is time-tabled to include 100% of time working in Cardiology research








The cardiology department is highly active and has and is participating in many landmark national and international commercial and non-commercial studies, from phase 2 to post marketing. Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHSFT has the second highest patient recruitment to cardiovascular studies in the NIHR North West Coast for 2016-17. We also undertake original funded research projects, some of which are adopted onto the NIHR portfolio, leading to potential first author publications.

Full MRCP is essential with at least 3 years clinical work in approved posts since qualification.
Previous experience in Cardiology is desirable.
