This Control Systems Engineer report to the Control Systems Applications Manager and will work within the Strategy Regulation and Support Services, Control Systems and Automation directorate based in our Fore Hamlet, Ipswich office. You will be a permanent employee.
You will attract a salary of £71,914.00 and a bonus of 3%. This role can also offer blended working after probationary period (6 months) - 3 days in the office and 2 remote

Job Purpose:
The role of Control Systems Engineer is to develop control systems applications, services and data for EPN, LPN and SPN networks ensuring safe operation and positive impact on reduction of customer interruptions and customer minutes lost.
You will be part of a team bringing improvements to all three network Control Systems across Smart Metering, DSO, DMS, SCADA, Automation, OMS, LV and Mobile applications.
You will be part of a team that maintains Control Systems application support 24 hours a day to ensure 24/7 availability of business-critical systems.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Ensure highest standards of safety are applied across all areas.
- Develop and maintain Control System applications configuration, monitoring, performance and preventative maintenance.
- Responsible for problem resolution including in depth root cause analysis for all Control and SCADA subsystems.
- Liaison with 3rd party service providers to develop new functions and rectification of service issues.
- Creation, implementation, tracking and assurance of system change notice, covering development and maintenance tasks.
- Provision of Control Systems Data Analysis and Regulatory Reporting.
- Participate in the Control Systems and Automation 24x7 standby rota with the further option for out of hours standby support.
- Liaison with IS Infrastructure and Ops Telecoms teams with a view to constant systems improvement though collaboration and proactive fault finding.
- Prepare accurate reporting on system performance, availability and risk.
- Participation in Software improvement and upgrade projects including testing, implementation and support.
- Document and implement operational standards relating to Control Systems.
- Provide technical advice to all parts of the business on matters relating to DSO, Control, SCADA and associated subsystems.
- Assist in business case development for Control Systems projects.
Nature and scope:
You will report to the Control Systems Applications Manager within the Control Systems and Automation Team. The Control Systems and Automation team are dedicated to making UK Power Networks Control Systems world class.
The team goal is to improve safety, application performance, innovation, data accuracy and usability with a view to reduce CI's and CML's while maximising return on investment and enabling DSO. Key to this is providing a Control System solution and service that is accessible and beneficial to the entire business.
You will develop control systems applications. You will take an active role in the integration of new technology such as environment build and automation. You will have an active role in delivering innovative projects that have positive impact on our performance.
It is our ambition to be regarded as an industry leader in the area of Control Systems and Automation. Above all, the role holder must have the capability to develop important areas of the Control Systems to achieve this objective.
Qualifications:
You will have experience in DMS and SCADA systems relating to the utilities sector and be able to demonstrate commitment towards safety, meeting business targets and finding solutions. We ask that you have good communication skills and the ability to liaise with other partners to resolve problems, develop and implement new initiatives.
- Have a level 4 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Have working experience working within highly developed control and automation system environments including Smart Grid and Low Carbon projects.
- Have an in-depth understanding of the distribution network and operating practices from LV to 132kV.
- Have working experience with scripting languages such as SQL, Perl, Python, C, PHP and VB.
- Have an In-depth understanding of SCADA systems and integration including DNP3, WISP+ and other industry protocols.
- Have a sound technical background in the operation and administration of control systems services and applications.
- Have experience in data engineering, data interrogation techniques, and systems integration.
- Work co-operatively with others to achieve shared goals.
- Understand GS and OS standards and the OFGEM regulatory framework.
- Strong customer focus, without losing sight of safety.
- Good abstract reasoning.
