The LPN may be assigned to one or more clinical areas within the medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), and/or offsite ancillary clinic to perform clinical roles, within the scope of their practice, when determined clinically necessary and appropriate. Some of the areas/clinics the incumbent would typically be assigned to, but are not limited to, are Primary Care(PACT), Hematology/Oncology (Hem/Onc), Integrative Pain, PM&R (Pain Management & Rehabilitation), Women's Health, Infectious Disease, Pulmonary, Neurology, Arthritis, Gastrointestinal (G.I.), and Renal.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performs assigned nursing care responsibilities, under limited to moderate supervision, including use of certain equipment, technology, and/or knowledge in procedures performed in the PACT and/or Sub-Specialty Clinics.
- Provides patient and family education regarding the patient's condition, procedures, and preventive health care; reinforces health teaching and promotes healthy lifestyles. Exercises intermediate skill in influencing and communicating with unusually difficult patients under limited to moderate supervision.
- Maintains precise adherence to basic principles of asepsis, safety, and universal precautions to provide a safe environment for patients, families, and employees. Incumbent possess knowledge of proper handling of instruments including cleaning and sterilization.
- Participates in training in the setup, use, reprocessing, and maintenance of their clinic/department specific materials/equipment leading to the initial competency and validation of ongoing competency at least annually.
- Provides supportive care to patients relatives.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's plan of care.
- Utilizes the computer to access patient data to verify appointments, review progress notes and short medication profiles. Orders labs and/or looks up test results under specific clinic profile. Documents progress notes on CPRS.
- Initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
- Carrying out assigned patient care based on the patents' conditions; to use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments; and to accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information.
- Completing work and submitting for general review by a registered nurse or physician for appropriateness and conformity with established policies/procedures.
- Observing and responding to the patient's needs for care, including medication and equipment-assisted care (patient/family education). In organizing and delivering care, the LPN recognized and considers several factors that impact the patient's care plan.
- Preparing and administering prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, and/or intramuscular) and performs minor, non-surgical, treatments according to established policies/procedures.
- Observing physical and/or emotional changes in patient's condition from prescribed medication/treatments, promptly and accurately documents notable changes, and reports any deviations from normal to RN or MD/DO.
- Recognizing urgent and emergent patient care situation and seeking assistance of the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiates appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
- Knowledge and understanding of human behavior, patient motivations and reactions to situations, and ability to appropriately utilize this knowledge in working effectively with patients, family members, and other staff.
- Establishing constructive relationships with individual patients and their families to elicit feelings and attitudes, and to promotes positive relationships, communication, and socialization skills.
- Fostering an environment of respect for individual patient and family rights to privacy and dignity in all aspects of care delivery.
- Incorporating knowledge and understanding of established customer service standards in all interactions with patients, family members, and/or other inter/external customers/stakeholders.
- Practices good customer service.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
